Thin Spaces

The Hillsong worship band has a wonderful song entitled, “Another in the Fire.” It speaks of the story of the three Hebrew children who after refusing to worship King Nebuchadnezzar were thrown into a fiery furnace. But as the King peers into those flames, he declares, “Look I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed.”

At a great moment of stress and fear, God showed up. There was “another in the fire.”

One of the stanzas of that song says, “And I can see the light in the darkness as the darkness bows to Him. I can hear the roar in the heavens as the space between wears thin…”

I got to thinking about that space that “wears thin.” Apparently, it is a Celtic Christian term that dates back several centuries. Those “thin places” were “rare locales where the distance between heaven and earth collapses.”

It is referring to those special moments (and/or places) where we meet with God. They are, personal and very real. One writer suggested that they are a kind of “skywalk between heaven and earth.” They facilitate real connection between the Lord and His kids.

Hillsong was suggesting that sometimes that “space” is so thin that we can actually hear the worship in Heaven. Another author suggested that the “veil between heaven and earth becomes transparent and there is a peace and presence from God that is almost tangible.”

As Jacob slept out in an open field with a stone for a pillow, he had an amazing moment with Yahweh. So, he declared in Gen. 28:16, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was unaware of it. …how awesome is this place! There is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of Heaven.”

Sitting in a “thin place,” sensing the very presence of God, “hearing” the Heavenly host worship Him, remembering how His love and grace have been extended to us can be life altering.

And that “thin space” can be anywhere. For many of us, the front seat of the car is an excellent place to commune quietly with the Lord.  For others, a favorite chair on the back porch can be our meeting spot. Some believers enter a “thin space’ as they take walks or even while on a daily run. For still others it is in the kitchen or the laundry room.

These almost magical moments in communion with God are available to all of us. We just need to stop the usual flow of noise and activity. So, this week, let’s all find a spot where we can sit comfortably; start ruminating on His Word and listen for the music. In that “thin space,” the orchestra of heaven is tuning up just for us!
