The Sweet Little French Man

Summer is the time for vacations, especially for those of us involved in education. And I usually try to jam at least two trips into those glorious 11-12 weeks. Case in point, I just got back from a trip to Alaska, and I leave again this week for some time in the Canadian Rockies.

But I had an experience a week or two ago that made quite an impression on me. You see, I am having some mobility issues, so a walker or a cane is always at hand, especially when I travel.

So, picture this… I was standing in line for coffee in the Vancouver airport leaning against the walker. I hadn’t bothered to lock up the wheels, I was just going to be there a moment. But as I reached for the coffee, I somehow lost my balance, tried to steady myself on the handles of the walker and instead went down with quite a thud!

Not only was I seriously embarrassed, but the worst part was still to come. I couldn’t get up. I can’t bend either leg enough to get up on my knees and leverage myself up. So, I was stuck.

But suddenly I heard a sweet little French man directing the crowd of men surrounding me. He laid my legs out straight, grabbed one shoulder and directed another gentleman to do the same on the other side. And suddenly, like using a fulcrum, they stood me straight up. No muss, no fuss and little pain.

What a blessing! Later as he passed my seat while getting on our flight, he stopped and asked how I was. His broken English sounded so sweet. His compassion was still so evident. I deeply appreciated his kindness.

There is no doubt that our world needs more kind people to step up and put their gentle spirits on display. Hold some doors open for the guys behind you. Carry a bag for a mom wrestling three little ones through the parking lot. Run an errand for a senior. Drop some cupcakes off at your local fire station.

And believers should be the first folks in line, trying to be a blessing.

Galatians 6:10 tells us to “do good to everyone…” and Ephesians 4:32 reminds us to “Be kind and compassionate to one another…”

So, this week, amidst the sun and fun, let’s all do good. Be kind. Help a lady get off the carpet in the airport. It matters.

I am still praying for that sweet little French man.
