A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Laughter (a Merry Heart) Does Good like Medicine (Prov. 17:22)
Have you had a good laugh lately? I am talking about a real, tummy juggling crack up. Hope so, because it is good for you! Dictionaries tell us that laughter is an audible expression, or appearance of merriment or happiness or an inward...
The Discipline of Disturbance
As you are reading this musing, I have just come back from ANOTHER trip to Alaska. Yes, I really do love that place. And viewing all the animals is the best treat! The eagles are my favorite. Those birds tend to build their nests way up high. ...
We Serve the God of Details
In his book, Billions of Missing Links, Geoffrey Simmons gives a rational and detailed look at hundreds of incredible mysteries in the natural world. He makes a compelling case for intelligent design (creationism) while documenting hundreds of...
Living Intentionally
Benjamin Franklin fascinates me. I have read several biographies on him, and although I doubt that he was a Christian, his character is worth reviewing. One thing that you will notice about Franklin was his obsession with the concept of living...
Facial Expressions Transmit JOY
For the past forty years or so, I have loved working with children. And one of my favorite observations is to note when a kid offers you his or her “full face.” What I mean by that is, when the child trusts you, when they are comfortable with your...
People of Faith
The first chapter of Joshua focuses on PEOPLE OF FAITH. Courageous people of faith speak by faith from God’s Word. The Bible is important to them. Those folks also get prepared for God’s purposes. They don’t wait to get themselves ready for the...
Under Too Long
Apparently at the World Championships in Budapest, USA’s two-time Olympian, Anita Alvarez finished her first solo routine, passed out and sank to the bottom of the pool. USA’s head coach, Andrea Fuentes noticed that she was under far too long. So,...
Do You Want to be Prosperous and Successful?
Imagine walking into a huge stadium with 50,000 people in attendance. Grab the microphone and ask this simple question, “Who wants to be prosperous and successful?” I am confident that every single hand would be raised. But the challenge begins...
Getting Ready for Tomorrow, Today
A quick study in the first chapter of Joshua speaks of the need to be ready for the opportunities that the Lord may send our way. Moses had died, but Joshua was ready because he prepared ahead of time. Being ready to step into opportunities...
Vulnerability
Stop a moment and come with me into the scene of Isaiah 6. At a certain point and place in time (the year King Uzziah died), the prophet Isaiah was allowed into the throne of God. As he entered there, he saw the Lord seated on a throne. Isaiah...
Precious Space
“The extreme greatness of Christianity lies in the fact that it does not seek a supernatural remedy for suffering but a supernatural use for it” (Simone Weil, philosopher). Pain is an incredible tool in the hand of God. Pain produces patient...
