A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Forget About the Easter Bunny
A recent edition of the magazine, Christianity Today carried an article about the history of the Easter Bunny. According to that article, the first mention of that furry hare was in 692 with the church council in Constantinople attempting to ensure...
Meaningful Prayer
Almost every child that I have ever had the privilege to hear pray, starts their prayer with, “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this day…” Somewhere down the line, they have heard adults pray and now they are patterning their communication with...
Authenticity
Yahweh gave the Israelites Ten Commandments. But in order to “keep” them, rabbis down through the ages have “condensed” those ten commandments into a mere 613 rules to live by. Modern living has further complicated things, so now those 613 rules...
Growing Old Together
Recently, I had the opportunity to spend time with some wonderful friends whom I have known for 20-30 years. You can imagine the memories we share. We remember how each of us came to know the Lord. We remember being there when the first of our kids...
What’s Next?
I have a terminal disease. Now before you grab for your phone to reach out and love on me a bit, stop and consider the truth that we all have a terminal disease. To help build and maintain perspective, ancient merchants used to write on the front...
We Wet Our Pants Once Too!
I love this story. It begins with a nine-year-old boy sitting at a desk in a third-grade classroom. Suddenly, there is a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart is going to stop because he cannot possibly...
Silly Laws
A while back, I found a web site full of non sensical laws. Let me share a few with you. The anti-NRA folks will be pleased to know that it is illegal to shoot any game in California from a moving vehicle, unless it is a whale. And whether they are...
How Much Is Enough? (What does it take to be happy?)
I like to chew on things when I am on a road trip. Nuts and chips work. The sweet and sour candies are a good choice. But my favorite is probably licorice. I like both the black and red versions. So, on a trip over this past Christmas break, I...
The Right Language
Flashback to 713 BC, an Assyrian ruler named Sennacherib invaded Judah and threatened Jerusalem. The Bible tells us this story in II Chronicles 32 and II Kings 18. Sennacherib sent some of his officers to Jerusalem with a message for the king of...
Resolutions
The New Year presents all of us with an opportunity to declare some heartfelt resolutions. (And no, I am not taking about the kind that you ignore by the second week of January!) Actually, I am thinking about Jonathan Edwards. The great American...
No Separation
Years ago, there was a widely circulated idea that everyone is six or fewer social connections away from each other. It was called “Six Degrees of Separation,” or the “Six Handshake Rule.” It is the idea that “friend to friend” connections (with...
