Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Then Sings My Soul
Yesterday I had a wonderful conversation with a dear friend. We were discussing her mother who suffers significantly from Alzheimer’s disease. Her sweet mom is struggling a great deal. At this point, her mind is a blank sheet of paper. She can’t...
Thank You for the Parachute
Like everybody else, I have tough weeks. Sometimes they get strung together like beads and can get overwhelming. I am in one such season. So this morning, I broke out a notebook and pen and began to re-focus my attention. I wrote at the top of the...
Folks are Watching
Last Sunday our church had a prolonged worship service. There was virtually no preaching. The music team led us through a series of prayer concerns and we culminated our time together with communion. Maybe because our corporate worship lasted...
Final Words
I fancy myself as somewhat of a “wordsmith.” I like reading dictionaries. I love dissecting famous speeches. Listening to recordings of major addresses is so much fun. The cadence is remarkable, the phrasing so noteworthy. Words carry meaning, the...
Fan or Follower?
A few months back I read a book entitled Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman. His premise was that becoming a completely committed follower of Jesus is much more than just being an “enthusiastic admirer”. Idleman observed that “fans” tend to only want to be...
Delighting in the Grandeur of God
As you read this musing, I am sailing the inland passage of Alaska. This is one of my favorite places to be. You sit on a balcony with a pair of binoculars and watch God’s incredible nature float by. The mountains of Alaska are variegated shades of...
Extra Time
A few days ago, an extra second was added to “Coordinated Universal Time” in order to synchronize atomic clocks with astronomical time. Apparently, the earth’s rotation around its axis is not very constant. Every now and again, an adjustment is...
Best Friends
As I write this note, my dear friend of 32 years is finalizing the details for his move out of state. Dennis Bock has been the Assistant Superintendent of Stoneybrooke Christian Schools since our inception. All along the way, he has worked so...
Borrowing Grief We Don’t Have To
As I am writing this note I am 39,000 feet up in the air en route to Dallas. As we did the rocket take off from John Wayne airport, my view of the coast line was stunning. There were no clouds to obscure my vista. The ocean was a variegated...
God with Us, Us with Them
As a kid growing up in Hawaii, I heard a lot about the story of Father Damien. In 1864, he left his native country of Belgium and began to serve as a Catholic missionary on the island of Oahu. In 1873 he arrived on the island of Molokai to serve...
Are You Looking Forward to Heaven?
Every so often, the news outlets carry a story about someone coming back from the dead. A couple of months ago, there was a story about a man in Ohio who had a heart attack and experienced about 45 minutes without a heart-rate, pulse or any blood...
