A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

My New Watch
I got a new watch during my trip to Israel. And it is different. It does not have any numbers on its face. Instead, it has the first twelve letters of the Hebrew alphabet. So why don’t the Jews use numbers? There is a very interesting...
The Hulda Gates
I just came back from another amazing trip to Israel. There is so much to process and even more to apply. But one pressing reflection has to do with our coming celebration of Easter and a few gates visible on the southern steps of the Temple Mount...
Just Pedal
In Tim Hansel’s book Holy Sweat, Tim reflects on his relationship with the Lord in a way that most of us can relate to. He says, “At first, I saw God as my observer, my judge, keeping track of the things I did wrong, so as to know whether I merited...
The Effects of Generosity
I recently had a conversation with a friend on the topic of generosity. He was sharing some of the physiological impacts of living a generous life style. Studies with burn victims or others who have been seriously harmed in an encounter show that...
The Right Hand
Apparently a mix of genetic and environmental factors determines whether we are right or left handed. The majority of Americans are right handed, but 15% are left-handed. According to a study done at the St. Lawrence University in New York,...
Our Most Frequent Sin
Pastor John MacArthur once said, “Worry is the sin of distrusting the promise and providence of God. And yet, it is a sin that Christians commit perhaps more frequently than any other.” We know it is wrong. In point of fact, it is a sin. It robs...
Keep Your Friends Close and Your “Enemies” Closer
Stop by any family restaurant on a school night and you’ll be able to see a classic exchange (actually the lack thereof) between parents and teenagers. Buried behind that diminutive phone screen are the eyes of a detached young girl or boy. They do...
Spiritual “Check Engine Lights”
A team of scientists from Stanford University is focused on taking fitness trackers up a notch. They are researching the use of wearable sensors that could be personalized to sense a person’s heart rate, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature and...
Nothing is Too Hard for God
There is an amazing object lesson tucked into the book of Jeremiah that is very pertinent to today’s tumultuous culture. Let me share the historical context. Judah (the two tribes in the southern part of Israel) was warring with Babylon....
Give Me that Hill Country
Last week Adele Dunlap, the oldest American resident (she was 114 in December) died. About the same time, I read an article about an English gerontologist, Aubrey de Grey who published a scientific paper 15 years ago in the Annals of the New York...
Whining and Grumbling
Social media today is awash with whining, grumbling and complaining. So much so that a friend recently was begging her online friends to go back to posting boring pictures of meals or feet in the sand rather than all the political diatribes. The...
Forgetting What is Behind
I am convinced that one of the top 5 mistakes modern Christians make is the constant focus on our past. The apostle Paul must have thought it was a big deal too. In the book of Philippians, he exhorts us to “forget what is behind and strain for...
