Monday Musings
2008 – 2021
A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Cracking the Shell
Being such a fan of books, I often get asked for a summer reading list. And every year, at the top of that list I always put The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. Not only are the stories compelling for any age, the spiritual “parallel” truths...
Our Root Systems
Here is a fun fact: our California coastal redwood trees can soar to heights of well over 300 feet. And they are gorgeous! (I once went RVing near Santa Cruz in the winter. I wanted to see some of those big trees up close and personal. I almost...
(Another) Bad Day
Almost eleven years ago today, I wrote a musing entitled “Bad Day.” Well, today is another one of those “bad days.” A dear friend just went home to be with Jesus. I know she is dancing around in her new body but I am struggling with deep sadness...
Just Show Up
In the last few weeks, I have had personal contact with several families dealing with their precious loved ones who suffer from some sort of mental illness. For most of my life, people just did not share stories about relatives who had mental or...
Learning to Trust
There are lots of stories in the Bible that teach us to live by faith. Over and over again, we see examples of real people trusting God to work on their behalf. Consider Abraham as he trekked towards Mount Moriah. In obedience to God’s...
Spiritual Scaffolding
On my recent trip to Great Britain, I noticed that London was filled with huge cranes. High rise buildings were under construction everywhere! And around each of those structures was a labyrinth of steel platforms and piping. Clearly the engineers...
Bus Billboard
I just got back from an extended trip to England, Scotland and Ireland. And as the Irish would say, “It was grand!” And I came away with a number of spiritual observations. The most significant of which revolved around a sign I saw on the...
Our Pastor is a Taxi Cab Driver
Sadly, Christianity in the U.S. has a pretty poor reputation and might be typified as rather “soft.” We have earned that reputation and reinforce it routinely as we sit on soft chairs in our air-conditioned auditoriums, sipping good coffee and...
The Importance of Music
I have zero musical talent and offer two personal stories as proof. As my 8th grade year drew to a close, our Catholic school did a special mass presentation. As the nun began our preparation, she was passing out the song books and paused in front...
Prayer and Curse Tablets
As you read this musing, I will most likely be touring around England (hopefully on the correct side of the road). I do enjoy reading things from English history and so I paid particular attention to an interesting section I recently found in John...
