Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

The Example of George Mueller
I am often encouraged in my Christian walk with the stories of folks who have gone before us. George Mueller is one of my favorites. He was born in 1805 in Prussia but moved to England as a young man. The story goes that he lived a pretty godless...
The Exchanged Life
Seasoned believers are familiar with the seminal verse found in Galatians chapter two: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved...
Practicing the Presence of God
In the New Testament, Jude (the half-brother of Jesus) urged us to “build yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God…” To keep ourselves immersed in the love of God is challenging. We...
Building Up Myelin

As I write this musing, I have a lizard in a cage sitting on my desk. Perhaps that seems a bit strange to you, but it is part of my attempt to deal with a life time phobia of those silly little creatures. I grew up in Hawaii and they were...
Caring for Spiritual Leaders
When pastors or spiritual leaders of Christian organizations battle with moral failure or get divorced or struggle with their teenagers, we often are perplexed. Aren’t they supposed to be different? Don’t they have a “PH.D.” in Godly living?”...
The Paper Bag
Robert Fulghum tells a story about his daughter, a few childhood “treasures” and a paper bag. It seems that one morning, his little girl handed Robert two bags as he was about to leave the house. One was his lunch, and she called the second bag,...
Time for Some Repenting
Most people turn over their new leaves and do all their planning around the first of January. But I have always used the start of a new school year as a time for personal reflection and course adjustments. (The Bible calls these courses...
Let’s March
The older I get, the more I think about the importance of being an influencer. As I am coming up on my 50th spiritual birthday (anniversary of my decision to follow Christ wholeheartedly) and my 70th regular birthday, I have been considering...
