A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Is God in Your Boat?
Mark Creech recently wrote an article for The Christian Post entitled, “Is God Asleep in your Boat?” And I loved it. He was referring to the story that appears in three of the gospels, but I like the account in Luke 8. Jesus said to His disciples,...
Reach Out and Listen
This morning, I read an article that was printed in the Wall Street Journal. I am not sure of the date of the incident, but I found it to be extraordinarily upsetting. It has to do with an ongoing two-month exchange between a 36-year-old Florida...
Responsibility
In one of John Maxwell’s books on leadership, there is a good story about one of the men at the Alamo. As you may remember, in 1835 a group of very committed Texas patriots made a stand against the Mexican army at a small mission-turned fort in San...
Murmuration
Like you, I really enjoy learning new things. This morning, I learned the definition of the term “murmuration.” My vocabulary got expanded as I looked at a video of some starlings racing across the fields in the Midwest. You may have seen how they...
Gloomy Christians
The Scottish theologian William Barclay, once wrote, “A gloomy Christian is a contradiction in terms. And nothing in all of religious history has done Christianity more harm than its connection with black clothes and long faces.” A gloomy Christian...
Stephen, Please Call Your Mom
Years ago, some handmade cardboard signs began to pop up around the train station in San Juan Capistrano. They very simply said, “Stephen, please call your mom.” No one knew who Stephen was, none of us had any idea about his age or the...
Uncomfortable, but Pressing On
I really love the movie, Chariots of Fire. Of course I admire the character of Eric Liddell. Not only did he refuse to violate his principles at the Olympics and run on the sabbath, but ultimately, he died serving as a missionary in China. But the...
Sailing Your Ark
Genesis chapters 6-8 tell the incredible story of Noah and the ark. God saw that the earth was corrupt and full of violence and he said the Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people… I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.” For...
Perception
I recently read about an experiment that was conducted by Robert Kleck in the 1980s called the Dartmouth Scar Experiment. It focused on the power of perception over reality. The folks that participated were told that a huge scar was going to be...
My Sheep Know My Voice
I recently read an article about a sea otter pup that was separated from its mother in Morro Bay on the Central Coast of California. Animal rescuers found the pup and wanting to connect the pup with his family, got an ingenious idea. They recorded...
Just Enough
I have seen Christmas celebrations go both ways. It can be an incredibly joyous time, and it can also be a disaster. I remember the year my brother was excitedly looking forward to receiving some sports equipment. I think he wanted a new football,...
