A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Our Purpose in Life
I read about an executive headhunter who specializes in finding executives for major firms in the US. He remarked, “When I get an executive that I’m trying to hire for someone else, I like to disarm them. I offer him a drink, take my coat off,...
Pause and Think
Recently, I have had the privilege to help a young friend learn to drive. One day, as we sat at a traffic light, I shared with her my most important driving insight. I told her she had to develop the “one-two-three” mentality for entering an...
God Uses Hardships
I have been doing a “deep dive” into the book of Psalms this summer and ran across this troubling thought in Ps. 60:3: “you (God) has shown your people desperate times.” Another translation states, “God has made His people see hard times.” But it...
The Power of the Touch
Relationships are so important and they need to be communicated. There is definitely kindness and energy expressed in our words, written or spoken. There is a wonderful surge in our emotions as we receive a gift. But there is incredible power in...
You Matter Enough to God
Do you realize that slavery is still a major evil in our modern world? In 2022, some 167 counties still have some form of slavery and that atrocity affects 46 million people. That is human tragedy at its worst! I can’t imagine standing on...
The Blessing of Music
I am spending my summer rooted in the book of Psalms. I bought one of those notebooks that have the scripture on one side and a blank page on the other. I can’t draw, so there are no illustrations, but I sure am connecting with my heart. I was...
Hello Darkness
Simon and Garfunkel’s song, The Sound of Silence has been a favorite for years. But just the other day I read a story about the background for that song. It seems that Art Garfunkel had a college roommate named Sandy Greenberg and they became very...
Dyed with Words
Dyed with Words Paul Tripp in his book, War of Words says, “Every day of our lives is filled with talk. Every moment is infected with talk. Every relationship and situation is dyed with words.” What we say and how we say them literally stains every...
A Flickering Candle
As an avid reader, I have some preferences. I really do love a good biography. I will read about kings, queens, sports figures and the like. But my all-time favorites are stories about missionaries, church leaders and scholars who commit...
Doctrine and Love
I recently was reading about the famed football player, Tom Brady. The article was listing all the things that he avoids in his diet. One of them is alkaline salt. (I had to look up that one. Apparently it isn’t good for your bones.) You might...
Dependence
Not too long ago, I was doing some self-assessments. And I realized that although I spend a great deal of time in the scriptures, I am often looking for content. I am like those baleen whales that suck in tons of sea water, spit it out through...
