I Am a Child of God

Let’s say that you get cornered at your spouse’s company picnic by a couple of nosey workers from the warehouse. And they ask you the question, “So, who are you?” You might start by identifying your spouse. You might share that you love to swim and watch the Olympics. You could reveal that your favorite meal is steak and that you were born in West Virginia. You could list your siblings and announce that you have visited 30 some countries.

But none of those comments actually answer the question, “Who are you?”

The apostle John takes on that challenge in I John 3:1 where he says, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God…” Who am I? I am a child of God.

I was created in His image, chosen before the foundation of the world, redeemed by His blood, adopted into His family and blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. He is my Father (II Cor. 6:18). He loves me unconditionally. He listens to me. He loves to be with me. He protects me at all times. He directs and guides me.  And when I need it, He will correct me.

I am a child of God.

The Christian country band known as “Cain” has a song called, “I’m so Blessed.” In part it says, “I’m so blessed, I’m so blessed. Got this heartbeat in my chest. No, it doesn’t matter about the rest. If I got you, I’m so blessed. Cause on my best day, I am a child of God. On my worst day, I’m a child of God. Oh, every day is a good day and you’re the reason why.”

On my best day, I am probably reflecting the character of my Father, making good choices and obeying His Word.  On my worst day, I am either being disobedient or facing some “Father- filtered” lousy circumstances. On both days, He is right there beside me.

So, this week, if you are struggling with the weight of some difficult “stuff,” remember who you belong to. If Christ is your Lord and Savior, you are a child of God, and you are blessed.

And if it is a great week, blow up some balloons, throw some confetti and rejoice over the blessings at hand. Remember you are a child of God!
