Permission to Eat

Apparently the latest rage at state fairs this summer is fried Kool-Aid! Charlie Boghosian is the self proclaimed inventor of this “fun food,” and he also claims to have invented the fried Oreo and sold over 2 million of them. These delicacies should be added to a long list of yummy treats like fried zucchini wieners, fried spam, deep fried spaghetti and meatballs and fried butter!

If I were making a list of my own “fun foods,” the list would include root beer popsicles, Cadbury Chocolates (from England) and Cheerios.

Yes, Cheerios are a great snack food that should only be eaten by the handful (dry, no milk, please). Come to find out, Cheerios have been General Mills most popular cereal since 1951. One out of every eight boxes of breakfast cereals sold is those exciting balls of dough. They were originally called Cheerioats and now come in several flavors including honey nut and chocolate.

Like any “fun food” that is not so good for you, I have looked long and hard for some kind of justification for consuming them in large quantities. And my answer is found in the fiber. But then, the feds took issue with the box that stated “clinically proven to help lower cholesterol” and the fight is on to have those precious words of comfort removed.

For those of you who are truly dedicated to healthy food choices, I apologize for my fun food humor and applaud your efforts. I do understand the Biblical principles associated with being a good steward of our bodies. But I do want to remind even the most stringently appropriate foodies among us….we can go overboard with this line of reason.

God’s plan for all kinds of things is MODERATION, not exclusion. Take a look at 1 Cor. 6:12 and consider the need to balance your appetites (for all kinds of fleshly choices).

A little of this and a little of that. Everything is lawful but not everything is profitable. Good choices are always required.

But, the bottom line this week, if you happen to swing by a carnival this summer and sample a bit of fried cheerios…in my opinion, it’s OK.

Just take a handful and move on. Just eat some extra broccoli that night!

By His Grace and for His Glory,
Sherry L. Worel
