Being in Love

I recently read a great little book by Francis Chan call “Crazy Love.” It was very convicting, but I highly recommend it. In a section called,”When you are in Love”Chan makes the case that folks in love act differently that those who are not in a committed relationship.

He remarks, “When you are truly in love, you go to great lengths to be with the one you love. You’ll drive for hours to be together, even if it is only for a short while. You don’t mind staying up late…you will spend a fortune on the one you are crazy about…you will jump at any chance to be together.”

But the sad thing is, while we often profess to have an amazing love relationship with Christ, our actions do not support the claim. Too often we go to great lengths to excuse away why we do not spend consistent time with Him. We often feel pressed just to spend a few minutes in prayer. We are too tired to meet with Him at night and too sleepy to join Him in the morning. If we are crazy about Him, our giving often doesn’t show it. Bottom line…our love relationship might need a tune up!

One way we might evaluate just how in love we are with Christ is to consider the question John Piper asks in his book, “God Is the Gospel.”

The critical question for our generation, and for every generation is this…if you could have heaven, with no sickness and with all the friends you ever had on earth and all the food you ever liked and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical pleasures you ever tasted and no human conflict or any natural disasters, could you be satisfied with heaven, if Christ was not there?

Could I be satisfied with heaven, if Christ were not there? Not if I am deeply in love with God and cherish His presence!
