The Majesty of God

This summer I had the great privilege to visit British Columbia and spend some time at Lake Louise (outside of Banff.) This unbelievably gorgeous “alpine” lake sits nestled in the Canadian Rockies. One afternoon I watched the clouds roll in and with them came a summer storm.

There was some soft rain that smelled great and then came the thunder. Methodically it echoed off the mountains with the sound dancing across the evening sky. It sounded like two very loud cymbals clapping out a rhythm. It was magnificent and a little scary!

And that’s how I think you and I ought to consider God…magnificent and a little scary. Too often in our contemporary society we consider the Lord to be our buddy. Clearly He has drawn near to us ( James 4:8) and has told us we are his adopted children and heirs of all that is His. But He is still God. Some reverential awe is required.

John Pipers says that “God rests too lightly in the church’s mind in our time. Consequently, the self-saturation of his people has made God and His glory auxiliary, and His majesty has all but disappeared from the modern evangelical.” And I agree.

Consider the words of I Chronicles 29:11: “Yours, Lord is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord is the kingdom and you are exalted as head over all.”

Our word for majesty comes from the Latin word that means “greatness.” When we acknowledge that someone deserves to be called majestic, we are giving respect and indicating the greatness of that person. When we call a monarchy “Your Majesty,” we are giving them great honor.

Our Lord, our maker, our savior, our redeemer deserves that same kind of respect and honor…ten thousand times over!

Maybe a good place to start this week would be to memorize some scripture that forces our minds and heart to exalt Him. Hiding the five verses of Psalm 93 in our hearts would do just that.

I am off to make my note cards….

By His Grace and for His Glory,
