A study last fall out of Britain determined that a person’s favorite way of eating eggs can predict their personality type. The study used a process known as data mining to uncover a statistical relationship between a person’s character, lifestyle and social class with their preference for boiled, fried, or scrambled eggs.
That study suggested that poached egg eaters were more outgoing, boiled egg consumers are a bit more on the disorganized side and that scrambled egg lovers are more guarded in their relationships.
As I read the results, I thought back to ten years ago or so when the administrative team at Stoneybrooke took the famous Myers Briggs personality inventory. This well known test is based on a series of questions or preferences regarding how people prefer to use their perception and judgment. Sixteen distinct personality types can result from the interactions among those preferences.
I had reason to review my results recently. Believe it or not, I am an introvert that is logical, wants just the facts and am oriented to a structured life. There are all kinds of implications to the various tendencies, but the bottom line is, I have a distinct personality type. (And by the way, I like fried eggs!)
Everyone else has a distinct personality too. And it got me to thinking…why am I the way I am?
Certainly our DNA plays a part. Our environment nudges us in various directions. Our culture impacts us. Our family history and the way we were brought up play a big part. But who decided that I would see the world through the particular set of lens that indicates my personality?
We find the answer in Thornton Wilder’s three act play, “Our Town.” One of the characters in that play signs her address like this. I Live: in Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire, United States of America, Western Hemisphere, Planet Earth, Solar System, The Universe, and THE MIND OF GOD.
Emily recognized her significance by acknowledging that her life is hidden with Christ in the mind of almighty God. He has determined the intricacies of my personality. I am wired to His specifications.
In Ezekiel 18, God declares “Behold, all souls are mine…” The Psalmist wrote, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it; the world, and all who live in it”.
I am His. He delights in who I am. He is “familiar with all my ways” (Ps. 139:2). He didn’t want me to be just like you or just like anyone else. I am uniquely made and valued in Christ with a personality that makes me, me!
This week might be a great time to consider who God has made you to be. Revel in His creativity. Enjoy your own uniqueness. Eat your eggs any way you want!
By His Grace and for His Glory,
